What is Skate Girls Tribe to Me?

Skate Girls Tribe

What is Skate Girls Tribe to me? Skate Girls Tribe is a group of people of all ages and genders, from different backgrounds with different skill levels that come together to spread love and peace through action sports and art. Our goal is to empower people and make them feel part of a community. The Tribe was created by street and action sportswear company, sPACYcLOUd, with philanthropic objectives. Our goal is to empower young women to become confident and independent, to simply have fun and lift each other up. Although the Tribe was created with girls and women in mind because we are so often underrepresented, the Tribe excludes no one, regardless of age, gender, and skill level. We want to share our love for skateboarding, longboarding, archery, art, and many other activities with the community and bring people together.

Skate Girls Tribe

Since being a member of the Tribe, I have had the opportunity to participate in philanthropic activities that benefit children in third world countries by donating my artwork and my time. The proceeds from these events have gone to Skatistan, an organization in Afghanistan that brings skateboarding, as well as healthcare and education to impoverished children. It is an honor to be a part of the Tribe and know that I can make a difference. My daughters have both gained confidence and shared many smiles and laughs at Skate Girls Tribe events. I have shared these smiles as well. Would you like to join us in laughter and love? All you need to be a member is an open heart and an open mind.

Skate Girls Tribe Longboarding on WO&D Canal

Skate Girls Tribe Longboarding Adventure

We met at Reston Town Center and were confronted by police. Guess what!?! “Skating is not allowed at the center”. Really? Just kidding. 🙂 We knew that. We were polite and played by the rules. To kill time while waiting for everyone to show up, Kat, Amy, and Mat had a mini competition in arm wrestling. Of course, Kat defeated everyone. Not!

armwrestling

Once everyone was there we walked to the WO&D Canal which was only two minutes away. We headed east toward Washington DC. The route had a very smooth pavement. The view was amazing with trees, grass, and flowers. We hit couple of small hills and had fun riding it in style.

Everyone enjoyed the ride. We are planning more events especially now that Autumn with its fresh breeze and beautiful colors is knocking on our door. Stay tuned.

Skate Girls Tribe at the A-Frame Challenge!!!

Skate Girls Tribe at the A-Frame Challenge – review by Tatiana Kolina

Skate Girls Tribe

Skate Girls Tribe joined other skaters at the A-Frame Challenge organized by Convoy Skateboarding and Alpine Skate Shop. The A-Frame Challenge skateboarding contest tested skills of the best skaters that the Washington DC area has to offer. The jam contest had 50 skaters pit against each other, for a 30 minute battle of grinds, gaps, flip tricks, rails and ledges. It was the first contest of its kind at Lake Fairfax Skate park.

yoshi

Yoshi Tanenbaum

The top three tricks performed on the A-frame within the time allotted would win the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prize. Yoshi Tanenbaum from Silver Spring MD won the biggest prize of $500.00 for the best trick.   There was an awesome line up of sponsors with all types of giveaways for the contestants. Skate Girls Tribe offered sPACYcLOUd merchandise.

The girls were happy to be able to participate in a skating contest for skaters of all ages and genders. It could have been daunting to show up at a male dominated venue but the organizer of the event, Eamonn Bourke, created a separate mini contest for girls. This helped the girls get over their initial shyness and do what they came to do – SKATE!!! Ekaterina Nekrasova and Angelina Lauriano were the first girls to show their skills. As the event went another girl joined in. The girls skated for 15-20 minutes and had way too much fun. What the girls found was that there were many boys who supported girl’s skaters at the event. All girls were given prizes from sPACYcLOUd. Overall, the day was a success. We hopes that girls will continue to show out!

DC Screening of Skateistan The Movie

SkateistanDC Screening of Skateistan The Movie

The first ever DC screenings for Skateistan the Movie were held at several known DC haunts, the first being Old City Farm. The second, was at Roll Skate shop and finally at Tropicalia. These events were sponsored by sPACYcLOUd and Skate Girls Tribe.

There was no one that left the screening uninspired by its message. Skateistan the Movie is about the state of the art skate park built in Afghanistan in 2007. It was the heart child of Oliver Percovich and his girlfriend Sharna Nolan, who were pleasantly surprised by the response the children had to their skateboards. Before they knew it they were holding informal lessons at an abandoned Russian fountain. The initial interest was of course by boys and soon after girls, this was the start of what would be Skateistan. It is said to be “the world’s first co-educational skateboarding school.”1 In one of the most gender discriminating countries in the world, one where it is even against the law for girls to ride bikes.

Skateistan The Movie screening

It was important to have a place that not only boys could be instructed but girls as well. This goal was achieved by having female instructors teach the girls on separate days from the boys. To date nearly 40% of the 400 students between the ages of 5-17 are girls. They come to Skateistan to take advantage of confidence building, educational enrichment courses, and of course skateboarding instruction. What became eye opening to me was that most of these children were not even born at the start of the Afghanistan Civil War. Although, they had nothing to do with the war they live in its ruins, impoverished in its wreckage. In the movie it was said, “People in other countries can see that these kids don’t all want to strap explosives to themselves…”

SKATEISTAN The Movie Poster

Skateistan has provided for these children a place where they can play safely and to learn tolerance for one another. Originally, some of the boys would knock the girls off of their boards and now they have realized that they have a right to skate too. This very small lesson has the possibility to grow and spread. These boys will be men one day and learning the importance of a girl’s right to skate can one day be the importance to her having equal rights. Skateistan is not a fluff piece at all, it documents the work Oliver Percovich and Sharna Nolan put in to help break down “social, gender, and ethnic barriers between the children of a war-torn country.”2

Bryan Ridgewood presents Tati with The Skateistan Book

I had the pleasure of interviewing Tatiana Kolina designer for sPACYcLOUd regarding her part in sponsoring DC screening of Skateistan. Tati humbly affirms her part in bringing this movie to the DC area. She said, “I was inspired to create Skate Girls Tribe from Skateistan because I realized that skateboarding helps to break many boundaries.” In Afghanistan “it is ethnic, sexism, wealth and poverty. I thought those same boundaries exist everywhere including DMV.”

Penny Killers cruisers hand-painted by DMV artists and donated to the silent auction.

sPACYcLOUd and Skate Girls Tribe were able to raise $945.00 to continue the Skateistan dream. It is through hardworking volunteers like sPACYcLOUd and Skate Girls Tribe that Skateistan is capable of opening a second skate park in Mazar-e-Sharif this year. The new place will help Skateistan to assist 1,400 students per week, which is over three times the amount of children they are able to assist at this time. They will be able to carry on their dream of giving children a chance to rebuild. Beginning first with themselves, building life skills, self-esteem, and tolerance for one another… what else can you ask for?

Art work donated by DMV artists to the silent auction for Skateistan

A huge thank you to the artists who donated art work Alex Merrit and Amy Louise Lauriano. As well as, the artist who hand-painted mini Penny Killer cruisers at Claudia Olivos workshop: Cassie Ramirez, Josy Wilkins, Angelica Wilkins, Ekaterina Nekrasova, Tatiana Kolina, and Allison Cuesta, Jessica Fure, Claudia Olivos, Sofia Goyonaga-Calatayud, and Halsey Wright Berryman. Thank you to Old City Farm, Roll Skate Shop, and Tropicalia for hosting the event. Last but not least thank you to all the supporters who came to the events.

Hot July – sPACYcLOUd and Skate Girls Tribe joined Vans Warped Tour 2013!

Hot July – sPACYcLOUd and Skate Girls Tribe joined Vans Warped Tour 2013 – exclusive review by Katherine Krakhmal and Tatiana Kolina

The first part of July has been really busy for sPACYcLOUd and Skate Girls Tribe. It was our first time ever at Vans Warped Tour 2013! We had been waiting impatiently for this event since January 2013. We were thrilled!

Vans Warped Tour 2013

sPACYcLOUd created an exclusive collection of jackets for Concrete Wave Magazine, Longboarding For Peace, and Vans Warped Tour 2013. Our jackets got good reviews and we were invited to be part of Concrete Wave and Longboarding For Peace booth at Vans Warped Tour. Our goal was to raise awareness about numerous non-profit organizations at the Warped Tour, promote Concrete Wave Magazine, Longboarding For Peace, sPACYcLOUd, Skate Girls Tribe, SHRALPER’S UNION, peace and philanthropy.

In case you did not know, Longboarding For Peace movement started by Concrete Wave publisher, Michael Brooke. It was originally set in British Columbia to work with first Nations youth. The movement expanded to Israel and the Palestinian territories with a goal to bring Israeli and Arabs together using longboarding. It helps getting youth on longobards, teaches kids safety, and promotes peace.

“Longboarding for Peace is a MOVEment forward. We encourage and empower people to step on, step up and make things happen. We want people to either: a)increase the amount of joy and happiness OR b) decrease the amount of pain and  suffering. Our goal is build a “peace army” of 50,000 people from around the world. We want them participating in either of these acts at least once per day. This will generate  18,250,000 acts PER YEAR…” – Longboarding for Peace mantra

Longboarding for Peace

sPACYcLOUd and Skate Girls Tribe team also had an honor to work with Noel Korman from Shralper’s Union. Noel was part of Silver Comet Skate Challenge and rode 188 miles from Georgia to Alabama in three days on a longboard! Read an article about Noel Korman called Chief Ladiga (pg. 98) at Concrete Wave Magazine Summer 2013.

Part of our mission was to encorage kids to visit different non-profit booths and get stamps in the Concrete Wave Magazine Passport. In return kids had a chance to win all kinds of cool prizes such as shirts, stickers, pins, longboards, limited edition watches, and even sPACYcLOUd jackets. We had many excited prize winners.

With Vans Warped Tour 2013 we stopped in Virginia Beach, Uniondale in NY, and Merriweather Post Pavilion in MD. Originally launched in 1995 with a lineup that was predominantly punk, the tour has expanded to include a variety of pop and hip hop acts. This year the line up included Never Shoot Never, The Summer Set, Go Radio, Action Item, Goldhouse, Itch, Citizen, and many others. Excitement was all over the place. Kids lined up at the gate one hour before the opening and waited impatiently to literally run toward the stage.

Thank you to Michael Brooke and his team for making this happen. This was an unforgettable experience! We got such a great feedback about our jackets and can’t wait to collaborate again with Concrete Wave and Longboarding for Peace in the future.

Skateistan The Movie
Four wheels and A board in Kabul

In 2007, OLIVER PERCOVICH and SHARNA NOLAN arrived in Kabul with little more than a couple of skateboards. In a country where children make up more than half the population, Ollie and Sharna soon discovered that their boards drew in local children like an unstoppable magnetic force. After beginning regular skateboarding sessions in an abandoned Russian fountain in the district of Mekroyan, a group of local boys began to join them. Then came the girls. These initial sessions, informal at first, eventually led to the foundation of Skateistan, Afghanistan’s first co-educational skateboard school. This is Skateistan’s story.

Skateistan

This documentary film follows Skateistan and its founders through the year 2009, documenting their daily struggle to break down social, gender, and ethnic barriers between the children of a war-torn country. As the foreign skaters quickly discover, local custom will only allow girls to skate in public up to the age of 12 – after that there must be no boys or men around. Ollie and Sharna realize that they will need a private indoor facility to be able to continue working with the girls. The city of Kabul, however, has suffered years of foreign invasions and massive destruction caused by civil war, so intact athletic facilities of any kind are nearly non-existent. There seems to be only one solution: build something new! The dream is to create a state-of-the-art indoor skatepark that will provide space to hold all-girl skate classes with experienced female teachers, as well as classrooms and access to multimedia for any boys and girls that are interested – even Kabul’s street kids that have very little hope for their futures.

Skateistan

The film also gives an intimate look into the lives of some of these street kids. We follow them through their daily routines and become witness to the changes in their lives that are triggered by their discovery of skateboarding. The documentary shows how MUJTABA and FAZILA make it back to public school with the help of Skateistan. In the case of WAIS, a talented young skater who seems to have broken out of his street kid’s life, we also become painfully aware of how fragile progress with these children can be.

Skateistan

In contrast, we are also introduced to FEROZ and MAHRO, a boy and girl from some of the more affluent families living in Kabul’s Mekroyan neighbourhood. We experience first hand the difficulties encountered by Skateistan as it attempts to integrate Kabul’s poor street kids into Mekroyan’s more affluent groups of boys and girls.

The filmmakers are in Kabul when Skateistan celebrates the International ‘Go Skateboarding Day’ holiday for the first time, by skating with MUJTABA, FAZILA, WAIS, FEROZ, MAHRO and 30 other children through the broken streets of Kabul from the Olympic Stadium to the Mekroyan fountain. The film documents the skateboard competitions at the fountain, as well as its sabotage by some of the locals who see the daily gatherings of Westerners and skateboarding kids as a security risk. We also accompany the Skateistan team when they visit the orphanage in Kufa for their weekly sessions, bringing tremendous joy into the otherwise joyless lives of its young residents.

Skateistan

Our cameras are there to capture exclusive footage when, for the first time ever, an international group of professional skateboarders including Holland’s LOUISA MENKE, America’s CAIRO FOSTER and KENNY REED, and Syria’s MAYSAM FARAJ visit Kabul to work with Skateistan’s kids and to explore the city for interesting skate spots. We see Kabul through the eyes of these pros and share their emotions when they first encounter Kabul’s street kids. We’re with Louisa when she experiences the challenges to being a female skating in an Islamic world – but we also capture the joy when Skateistan’s kids and the pros skate the streets and landmarks of Kabul together.

Throughout it all, our film tells the story of how Skateistan realized its goal – with the help of the Norwegian, Danish, Canadian and German governments – of building the first skatepark in Afghanistan. We document the meetings with ambassadors, an Afghan construction company and the Afghanistan National Olympic Committee, the latter of which eventually provides the land for what is now the biggest indoor sports facility in Afghanistan. We follow construction of the new skatepark facility until its completion and grand opening on October 29th, 2009.

In the end we show the kids of Kabul skating this amazing new park with the international pros, witnessing the incredible joy and hope that can be generated with the help of a four wheels and a board.

Go Skateboarding Day in Washington DC

Innoskate, Go Skateboarding Day, SkateFest, and Skateinstan!!! What a skateful weekend we had in DC. – by Tatiana Kolina

June 21-23 weekend started with the Smithsonian launching  Innoskate exhibit to celebrate skateboarding culture, history, innovation and creativity. Innoskate brought all of the skateboarding legends to DC including Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, Patti McGee, and many others. It was a typical hot and humid DC summer day though it was totally worth it to hear legends talking about past, present, and future of skateboarding outside of The Smithsonian National Museum of American History.

On Friday June 21st, approximately 500 skaters gathered at Palace 5. Skate Girls Tribe joined with the crowd for the first time.

Minute by minute, the crowd waited anxiously for the five-o to arrive. It was part of the plan. Once police and skaters were set, it was impossible to stay calm. Crowd was ready to explode with excitement and off they went to Pulaski.

Go Skateboarding Day @ Palace 5

SkateFest in Fairfax VA was full of skating festivities, giveaways, skateboard vendor tents, the Sk8 For A Cause, Skate Competition, all to benefit Children’s National Medical Center. Skate Girls Tribe’s skaters, London Bridges and Daniele Chiapello, participated at the event. It was exciting to see more girls participating at skating competitions. We hope to see even more girls next year.

On Sunday, to wrap up the Go Skateboarding Day weekend, Old City Farm hosted, first time ever publicly screened in DC, Skateistan The Movie. The event was sponsored by sPACYcLOUd with support of Albus Cavus and Dj Mate Masie Russell Campbell. It was a chill evening with kids painting on the walls, skating, dancing and socializing.

Skateistan

It was supposed to be a very calm evening but it came to a halt when several skateboarding legends appeared at the gate! Yes, it was Patti McGee, the first female professional skateboarder and the first female to ever be inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame. Another important guest was Di Dootson Rose, former professional slalom skateboarder and now on the National Skateboard Review. Everyone enjoyed Patti and Di Dootson beautiful energy.

Skatefest at Fairfax | June 21-22 | Fairfax VA

Skatefest at Fairfax – exclusive review by Diego Zazueta

The sun was shining and the weather was nice on both days. Just perfect for two days of skating! Everywhere you looked there were people skating, wether on the ramps or in the parking lot.

DSC_0253-1Skate Girls Tribe at Skate Fest

People of all ages just wanted to get their boards out and go for a spin. With plenty of live music and food and drink everyone was in it for the long haul.DSC_0092-1DSC_0097-1We were treated to Alt rock music from the 90’s to act as the soundtrack to our skate endeavors. The competitions were the high point of the day.

DSC_0057-1

DSC_0188-1With everyone watching or competing it was hard to get away for the ramps. On several occasions there were item tosses. It was fun to watch the girls throw out merchandise and watch all the guys fight over them.

DSC_0196-1-2

One of the thing that surprised me the most wasn’t all the amazing skating or the great music, but the amount of girl skaters who there were.

Some even competed! And they were really really good! From what I can tell the gap in numbers between boy/girl skaters is getting smaller and smaller every year.

It was a pleasure to be part of this event representing sPACYcLOUd. I had a wonderful time meeting new people and watching everyone skate and I can’t wait to do it again next year. If you miss this event then you missed out!

Skateistan Awareness Part I Old City Farm | June 23 | Washington DC

Skateistan Awareness Part I – exclusive review by Diego Zazueta

SKATEISTAN_poster2012Smal

I started the day by helping unload the equipment from the car. It was 2:00 in the afternoon and it was pretty hot. I primed the walls in preparation for the little artists. Peter from Albus Cavus outlined birds and flowers to make it easier for kids to start their artistic journey.

DSC_0066-1Exactly at 6pm we opened the gate and greeted our first guests. We had two ladies at the gate.  I offered them drinks and we all set in the shade to enjoy the nice afternoon breeze. After a few minutes Tati told me that the two women I was sitting with were world famous and pioneer female skaters Di Dotson and Patti McGee! I was completely blown away. Tati handed me a card that had an old cover of LIFE magazine from 1965 with a girl doing a hand stand on a skateboard. It was Patti McGee! I asked Patti if she would sign it for me and she did it happily!

Patti McGill

As more and more guests arrived the place began to glow with activity. Most of us were sat at the table area chatting and socializing.DSC_0151-1smaller As the sun went down and the day cooled off the fireflies came out to play with us. Around that time Bryan Ridgeway, who is responsible for bringing Skateistan to the US,  joined us in the festivities. It was such an honor to see Bryan at our event.

DJ Mate Masie

DJ Mate Masie from Urban Artistry was throwing perfect tunes for the occasion. Several people did break dancing. sPACYcLOUd gave away raffle prizes. After dark we moved to the lower level to watch the documentary: Skateistan. And boy was it interesting! It was an eye opening experience. It showed us a snick pick into the life of kids in Afghanistan and what they have to go through to get to school or work. Skating took their minds off of the hardships of daily life.  Through skateboarding kids made new friends. Skating tied everybody together. Boys and girls, different religions, and different nationalities all came together to skate in peace and harmony.  Skateistan is a good example for all of us. We do not need much to create a peaceful and happy community. It takes work but it is very rewarding at the end.

After the movie Bryan presented Tati with a signed copy of the Skateistan book.

It was a long and hot day but it was totally worth it. I had such a great time meeting new people and hanging out with old friends. I hope that we do another event like this soon. Till then, keep dreaming the good dream and always remember to follow your heart. It will always lead you in the right direction. Peace.
