Girl Power at Palisades Skatepark

As a skater girl, my very first skate sesh with sPACYcLOUd at Palisades, Washington DC was an eye opener. My experience there helped me understand the true meaning of “girl power”. There are so many girls in our community who want to try out skateboarding, but only some would actually pick up a skateboard, and only a very few would dare to go to a skatepark and ride around. Especially when a girl is a beginner skater, being the only female at a skatepark can be quite uncomfortable. Seeing all the guys doing tricks on ramps and rails can sometimes be so intimidating, that we would just end up sitting on the sidelines, wondering if we could ever be as good as them.

Meeting some of  the members of Skate Girls Tribe and getting to be a part of their team made me realize that skateboarding is not just about being good at the sport. It is about being good friends with those who skate. sPACYcLOUd helped me make friends with other skater girls. We felt more comfortable, encouraged, and motivated. In fact, it was actually the very first time I’ve seen more girls than guys at the park. We helped each other learn new tricks and challenged each others’ skills. And when we did that, we showed Girl Power!

The Late Shift: Freestyle

Skate Girls Tribe

If you’re near the Alexandria area of Virginia, sPACYcLoud and Skate Girls Tribe have a must-attend event for you to see this Friday, June 30th.

Part skate park, part secret pop up art show, Late Shift: Freestyle opens its doors to the rebels, the misfits, and the crazy ones. To those who see things differently and those who push the human race forward. We’ll be repping this philosophy at the event, because it’s our shared philosophy!

The details are super rad: experience a late-night art happening along the riverfront and in the Torpedo Factory. Founded in 1974 in an old munitions plant, the Torpedo Factory Art Center is home to the nation’s largest collection of working-artists’ open studios under one roof. That’s cool enough as it is, but it also has an indoor skate park! Skate Girls Tribe is ready to blow it up (pun intended)!

Event is followed by an outdoor screening of “Hermanas En Ruedas” (Sisters on Wheels), a documentary by Amberly Alene in partnership with Electicllama and Prince George’s African American Museum.

Hermanas Er Ruedas

Film tells the stories of young women in the underground skate culture in Havana, Cuba. Skateboarding in Cuba emerged in the 80’s but has recently grown rapidly with the new interchanges of culture and art from abroad that are taking place on the island. In Cuba, skateboarding is still an unrecognized sport by the government, and the girls search to find their paths in a subculture that is not only male dominated but also completely underground.
